I don't have an elaborate history worked up right now but one that seems very important to cover would be Wikipedia.

It would be interesting (though likely a waste of time) to analyze Imgur as sub-culture which separated from reddit a few years back but nevertheless seems to have perfectly conserved the 2008-12/3 "le random rage comics xd" type of humor to the very last letter. What drives adults late into their thirties to keep going at it? Have they simply reached an age where they cant adapt to newer trends?

I'd argue PUA/Sluthate was a huge force in moving internet culture and introduced the term "incel" and adding "cel" at the end of certain words.

Bodybuilding.com misc culture was huge in 08-13 and lasted till roughly 2016 as the zyzz hype started to die out.
The IQ of the average 4chan user I believe rose drastically until about 2013-2015 at which point it began to steadily decrease. The more intelligent 4chan posters were too young to post in the oldfag days (2005-2006) and left the site starting 2016-2017. Many left to other smaller alt chans. Naturally this is due to the growing popularity of the site and the trannification of the moderation (many of whom are oldfags).
Worth noting that old Reddit or proto-Reddit communities were essentially Anglo chauvinists. Take, for example, their obsession with dressing like Victorians that lead to them widely adopting suits and top hats as the sign of a true gentleman, or rewriting negro rap songs to not use vulgar language, or just generally being Anglophilic. Same general motivation behind the creation of "steampunk". I don't think this means they were earnestly pro-imperialisn, but the instincts that American negrified society was vulgar and should be disconnected from was there.

Memebase circa 2013 was perfectly illustrative of this.

The sort of humor that early video game developers had could today be classified as Reddit unquestionably. But, past maybe 2011, I don't think the majority of people in the Reddit subculture are intelligent or technically minded people in any capacity... they're people who suffer socially, but aren't really good at anything, so they copy what the "smart nerds" think and say.

I had this thought when I saw that the placeholder for an ammo counter in a Halo prerelease build was "42". The sort of people who would talk about Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in the early days of the internet were probably of significantly above average intelligence. Today, with the expansion of the internet, you had a deluge of people finding a place to fit in, and trying to ingratiate themselves with the smart ones. If you were a little smarter, you probably went to 4chan.

Reddit is a big website and there's many communities within it, but I would say it's overwhelmingly a normalfag website. I don't think it's full of people that "suffer socially", in the sense as nerdy types could feel alienated by their surroundings. It's hard to browse through the main page of reddit, check on the comments, and not find people talking about their real life, no matter the occasion. Most people on reddit are also already established on society, as the popularity of "wifey" posts are a sign of.

American culture has always had a massive debt to its English forbears and cousins and this rule holds for reddit and nerd culture in general. Alot of early internet culture was really just real life nerd discussions of the hobby store but in HTML and these places had their own canon of science fantasy where British authors featured prominently as titans of the genre (think of the impact of men like Arthur C Clarke and JRR Tolkien in the respective ends of science and fantasy). Additionally Terry Pratchett although I have not read any of his works I see constantly referenced as a wellspring of that particular form of reddit nerd humor which is/was common across forums across the internet.

I think Tumblr should get at least an honorable mention here; it was dominated by femoids and helped spread a lot of the vernacular of modern day woke talk, including pronouns, edgy identities like “bigender aromantic” and such. Also exposed a lot of kids to porn, starting them down the tranny pipeline. I don’t know what happened to it since it banned porn years ago, but major impact and unique culture nonetheless.

I've always been under the impression that the massive Tumblr exodus in ~2018 went almost entirely to Twitter, and that Tumblr remains a fully intact e-tribe there (and increasingly on TikTok) with greater-than-ever social and cultural impact.

Noticed another user mention the peak of high-IQ, culturally rich 4chan board culture being in ~2012-2015 - definitely true in many respects, but I'd argue that rather than these higher-quality users leaving in 2016-2017, they were slowly channeled into primarily using /pol/ beginning in 2014, with this trend bursting out across the culture of the whole site most strongly from 2015 (e.g. 'current year'-posting on /int/). The users that had been posting instantly-famous greentexts about space marines etc on /tg/ in 2013/2014 were the same people posting in redpill dump threads on /pol/ in 2015, then about Kek and chaos magic in 2016, and who either migrated to 8chan or got burned out by the increase in spam from 2017 onward. Anyone who claims (as many subhuman posters from the faggier boards like /lit/, /his/, /mu/ etc frequently do) that the 2016 /pol/ phenomenon was the introduction of an alien cultural force, and the retreat of genuine chan culture such as it had previously existed, is either a total newfag, an amnesiac, or just retarded - if anything it was the blossoming and consummation of all the cultural energies of the site that had been brewing for the previous half-decade (and arguably, for the entire history of 4chan as a community).

That would require here being high IQ.

Most here, including you, are clearly midwits.

I am pretty damn sure Reddit, and all these communities in general, went to shit due to exceeding some sort of dunbar number-like threshold. It will absolutely rape any sort of community that is built or by accident includes a consensus mechanism...

A bigger mystery is why Tumblr went the way it did - perhaps there was something about the format itself that attracted women and boosted every bad characteristic about them?

Here's an internet culture question for us. Why does guest-posting attract such internet big-men? Half of the guest posts on this site are people from this internet circle who can't be bothered with accounts. The other half are drive-by low-effort assertions of absolute superiority backed by nothing.
I want to be a cute midwit anime girl.

The early channers were the EEGs, the high-IQ migrants were the Yamnaya, we are the Nazi race scientists trying to quantify and restore the glory of the Aryan Race. This is a perfect analogy and I will strangle anyone who objects to it.

I will not divulge the origin of this information but at one point I could say absolutely 25-33% of Atomwaffen members had one, including every single one of them involved in the murders ( murderer ifunnies are well known in the press though).
Weren't all the Atomwaffen killings friendly-fire? The only one I can recall is when one in a cell converted to Islam and killed the other two.
What was Noontide? I remember Ulysses but what was this group?
I agree that tumblr had an outsized influence, possibly the largest of all time. Think about it, the entirety of the normalization of "announcing your pronouns" which mainstream politicians even do now, can be traced directly to tumblr. Fucking job websites have that now. In certain professions, like being a lawyer at a big firm, it's entirely a red flag that you are a social class enemy if you don't have your pronouns in your email signature. This combined with the severe-mental-illness-as-performative-niche-"gender" pretty much seals the deal for me for tumblr being the biggest IRL crossover of any internet culture.

Tumblr was intentionally designed to be as simple to use as possible, deliberately appealing to "non tech people." I do not think it is a coincidence that this attracted feminists and just women in general.
