I don't understand why bespokecommie's post "isn't an argument," it's also not really a theological position, it's just a (partially flawed) teleological argument.

The "argument" he was putting forward is one that is generally laden with theology. Your "counter-argument" was not, but instead was philosophical (something I won't pursue, as I don't engage in Greek nonsense). This can become confusing when dealing with Catholics and their like as the two are deeply intertwined for them, but when he says "purpose for which they were made", in reference to rocks, trees, and ducks, I assume this means "by God" - or else what? This all-too-common take put forward by many an Evangelical oil tycoon is usually based on the biblical notion of man having some sort of dominion over the earth and its living inhabitants.

If holding to a certain moral position which you oppose (such as torturing animals being wrong) is "chungus", ie, as I understand, milquetoast, what is the opposite of this? "Edgy"? "Hardcore"? This idea that people are feebly holding themselves back in some way for the sake of their socialization suggests that you both exist on the same scale or path of understanding but that you've bravely gone further somehow. Maybe they just disagree with you, not from socialization, but from genuine belief.

Or is anything that one might say on account of socialization so unclean that it demands you preach the opposite? There are words for this.
