I'm gonna defend the black suns. On an otherwise normal-looking forum, they feel like an honest reflection of the general culture. Admittedly, I agree, you could call them tacky, but how jarring they are is kind of the reason I like them. And as a bonus, the kind of person who would be offput them is probably not a person that would mesh well here anyway.

Chud mentioned wanting a undersea base feel maybe he could rip off the standard semiotic from Alien(1979). Or for a less taxing artistic task, why not some form of the Owl of Minerva? Another fun idea that came to my mind using hieroglyphs like Amarna 1.0 but remixed to fit each board.

I consider the banners a better place to reflect site culture than the tiny board indicator, prime reason being there's space to actually express something there. While the black sun icons are just there what was supposed to a floor decoration of power made a 2d notification symbol. Just doesn't sit right in my view.

I second this. Relevant hieroglyph icons for each board would be very charming and much more adequate for the forum feel. The sonnenrad stands like an afterthought.
