There was a lot of discourse around the release of the 2020 census regarding the massive increase in multiracial Americans, going from around 3% in 2010 to over 10% in 2020. While some of this increase is obviously legitimate a lot has to be whites LARPing as multiracial. You can get a sense of this by looking around at the below map. In super white areas like Vermont, rural Kentucky, parts of upstate New York, West Virginia, it’s super common for the most numerous “minority” to be “two or more races—non Hispanic” often more numerous than all other minorities combined. The numbers aren’t always trivial either. I’ve seen census tracts in places like West Virginia that are like 92% white, 5% “multiracial” and 3% other minorities. The “two or more races non Hispanic.” Often this “multiracial” population is a larger percentage than in extremely diverse areas in Texas. Sounds realistic. 

I don’t know if this is “flight from white” due to social pressure or just white people living in homogenous areas taking family legends of their great great great grandma who was a Creek Indian more seriously than white people who live in areas with actual minorities. Similar rapid changes in ethnic self identification have occurred in the past. In the 1980 census 22% of American identified as ethnically English, but this dropped to 9% by 2000. It’s also notable that the percentage of Hispanics who identified as “white” in the 2020 census dropped to 20% from over 50% in 2010. Some of this due to a change in the way the question was asked, but there’s no doubt that tens of millions of people, Hispanic or otherwise, identified themselves as “white” in 2010 changed that identification by 2020. Don’t know what all this means, but it’s information that I don’t see anyone reckon with whether they’re dooming about white demographic decline or celebrating it.

It's none of these things. It's formal cause. Forms or concepts are not innate to material or nature. These things that create our world of intelligibility, its appearance of order, are social in origin. Forms or concepts do not exist a priori, Plato's a goddamn drunk. And they're not lying around temporally waiting for us to trip over them, acknowledge them and thus incorporate them into our world, melding our world with the "real" world.
Concepts are anthropological forms. Their presence, persistence or disappearance relates to participatory social practices. Explanation is not found in any substance or material measure.
